Patanjali Yoga Mantra-"Yogena Chittasya"

The opening prayer for yoga "Yogena Chittasya" is chanted in the beginning of any yoga class.

Chant the Yogena Chittasya mantra and let in the vibes of the free and open spirit of existence in you, below are the lyrics:


 

"OM

Yogena chittasya padena vacham

Malam sharirasya cha vaidyakena

Yopakarottam pravaram muninam

Patanjalim pranjaliranato’smi

Abhahu purushakaram

Sankha chakrasi dharinam

Sahasra shirasam shvetam

Pranamami Patanjalim"


 

Meaning:

Yogena cittasya – ”who by the yoga of mind” Yogena ”by yoga”, Chittasya ”of mind/consciousness”

Padena vacam – ”by the grammer of sanskrit purifies speech” Padena ”grammer”, Vacam ”speech” – also understanding ”vak-tapasya” the power of speech

Malam sarirasya’ca vaidyakena – ”and by ayurveda (removes) impurities of the body” Malam ”impurity”, Sharirasya ”body” (Shariyam=body), ca ”and”, vaidyakena ”by ayurveda”

Yopa karottam pravaram muninam – ”the best sages of all he who removed that” Yo(ha)apakarot ”he who removed”, Tam ”that”, Pravaram ”the best”, Muninam ”Sages of all”

Patanjalim pranjaliranato’smi – ”to that Patanjali I bow with my hands in prayerPatanjalim ”to that Patanjali”, Pranjaha ”with folded hands”, Ranatos mi ”I bow” (asmi: I)

Abahu purusha karam – ”who through skill in action has become the Self” Abahu ”with strong hands”= skill in action, purusha ”Self”, karam ”becomes” (kri=to do)

Sankha cakrasi dharinam – ”holding a conch and a disc” Sankha ”conch” symbolizes awakening, cakrasi “disc” symbolizes cutting the head of ignorance, dharima= “to hold”

Sahasra sirasam svetam – ”with white head and crown chakra” Sahasra “crown chakra”, sirsam “head”, svetam”white” – the white colour symbolizes the mature purity/wisdom of Patanjali

Pranamami Patanjalim – ”to that Patanjali my salutation goes” Patanjalim “to that Patanjali”, pranam “salutation”
